Enacted in 1955, the Essential Commodities Act empowers the government to regulate the production, supply, and distribution of essential goods to protect the public from hoarding, black marketing, and artificial shortages.
The 2020 Amendment removed key items like cereals, pulses, onions, potatoes, and edible oils from the essential commodities list. The government can now regulate these only during extraordinary situations like war, famine, or a sharp rise in prices.
With the West Asian crisis disrupting LNG shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, the government invoked the ECA to prioritise natural gas supply to essential sectors like household cooking gas (PNG), CNG for vehicles, and LPG production.
